Fresh Fruits And Vegetables Are Sources Of Nutrients For Pet Birds

Nutrients For Pet Birds

Birds need fresh food items to get their nutrients needs. So, apart from giving them seeds and pellets, you must also serve them fresh vegetables, greens, and fruits. These nutritious food items should compose 20% to 25% of your birds’ daily meals.

However, some veggies should be avoided such as pale vegetables, namely head lettuce, iceberg, and celery. Why? These vegetables are rich in water and therefore provide very little nutrients. Meanwhile, avocado is considered harmful to birds. So, never feed your birds with this.

Yellow, orange, and red vegetables, including sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, and peppers, are rich in vitamin A. Your birds will benefit from consuming these items.

In serving fruits and vegetables, do the following:

  • Wash them thoroughly to remove dirt and chemicals
  • Cut them into small sizes or pieces for easy digestion
  • It is not necessary to remove the skin
  • Serve the vegetables and fruits in a separate dish
  • Do not let your birds develop an addiction to a specific food item. Reduce its serving amount if necessary.
